Coffy Box Music

Original Songs • Voiceovers • Soundtracks • Sonic Storytelling

Coffy Box Music is the creative heartbeat of Jessica Holter’s universe — a living, evolving sound library born from the legacy of The Punany Poets. What began in 1995 as a radical blend of spoken word, R&B, hip‑hop, gospel, and theatrical scoring has grown into a full-spectrum audio studio where poems become songs, stories become soundtracks, and characters come to life through voice and music.

Sonic Legacy

The Origin • The Mission • The Archive

Founded in 1995 by Jessica Holter, The Punany Poets emerged as a radical response to the AIDS crisis and a celebration of Black love, intimacy, and truth‑telling. Their groundbreaking blend of spoken word, R&B, hip‑hop, gospel, and theatrical scoring — often performed live and captured in studio sessions — forms the foundation of Coffy Box Music, the publishing arm of Holter Intellectual Property, Inc. Bay Area–born and culturally rooted, this catalog preserves a living archive of radical testimony, sensual storytelling, and communal healing.

Creative Evolution

Producers • Personas • Remixes & Covers

From the HIP Archives to new studio collaborations, Coffy Box Music features work with Lev Berlak (Too $hort, E‑40), D’Wayne Wiggins (Tony! Toni! Toné!), Femi Andrades, Keno Mapp, and sessions at The Grill Studios. Alongside these originals, the catalog now includes remixes and character‑driven covers performed by personas who come to life through pantomime, dance, and theatrical embodiment on stage. Suno AI reinterpretations expand the soundscape even further — from trap‑house grit to gospel lament — while in‑universe performances like Scarlett Falls’ sultry “Happy Birthday” rival Ms. Monroe’s iconic rendition. Coffy Box Music continues to evolve as a sonic sanctuary of Black love, intimacy, and truth‑telling.

Archive & Innovation

Restoring Classics

Here, Holter’s archive meets her innovation. Classic recordings are restored, reimagined, and remixed alongside brand‑new compositions crafted with collaborators, musicians, and modern tools. From intimate voiceovers to cinematic scoring, Coffy Box Music preserves the soul of the original work while expanding it into fresh sonic dimensions.

🎧 Unpimpable

Turning a Poem into a Song —

Breathing New Life into the Archive

Unpimpable is a perfect example of how Jessica Holter continues to evolve her sonic universe, transforming classic poems into fresh musical experiences. As she celebrates 31 years in her Business of Love, Holter revisits her early work with new tools, new collaborators, and new creative fire. What began as a raw spoken‑word piece has grown into a multi‑layered musical offering: the original poem, the soulful studio production by D’Wayne Wiggins, and now an AI‑assisted remix that brings modern texture to a timeless message.

This process — honoring the archive while reimagining it — is at the heart of Coffy Box Music. It’s a living catalog where old recordings find new breath, new beats, and new audiences. Listen to versions of Unpimpable and hear how a poem becomes a song, and how a song becomes a legacy.

The Head Doctor & Skin Flute

From Breakout Poem to Reimagined Soundtrack Performance

The Head Doctor, Jessica Holter’s breakout poem, was recorded in 1999 at Lev Berlak’s Oakland studio, The Grill, just in time for her television debut on HBO’s Real Sex in 2000. Long before it became a cultural touchstone, the poem was played from car stereos in parking lots to draw crowds into her early shows — a grassroots hustle that helped launch The Punany Poets into national visibility.

Today, this iconic piece is reborn in Skin Flute, a sensual, theatrical reinterpretation performed by AI recording artist Scarlett Falls. This new version blends Holter’s original erotic wit with modern production and character‑driven performance, expanding the poem’s legacy into the evolving soundscape of Coffy Box Music and the world of Players & Pearls at Club Surrender.
